The Hangman’s Tree

A crooked black tree with a noose hanging from a branch has a crow sitting on it against a brown and black background.

I woke up one morning and looked outside.

There was a large crowd.

They were quiet, still, and moved as one

Because they were watching executions on the Hangman’s Tree.

The Hangman’s Tree, The Hangman’s Tree,

It frightens me, The Hangman’s Tree.

I ran outside to see. The bodies hung limp.

Many were crying, lost, and confused.

Yet, I knew better.

A message was being sent from The Hangman’s Tree.

The Hangman’s Tree, The Hangman’s Tree,

It’s warning me, The Hangman’s Tree.

I know of one person who can help me.

My mother, a powerful witch.

She can help me gain power

So that I never again will have to fear The Hangman’s Tree.

The Hangman’s Tree, The Hangman’s Tree,

I will conquer the tree, The Hangman’s Tree.

I’ve lost nohing and have gained much.

I have practiced on my own, and I am ready.

Today, the tree will be no more.

But when I return, there’s a surprise for me on The Hangman’s Tree.

The Hangman’s Tree, The Hangman’s Tree,

Oh, how I loathe thee, The Hangman’s Tree.

Above me is Mother. Father and Brother, too.

Their faces are contorted in agony.

All except for one.

My mother smiles down on me from The Hangman’s Tree.

The Hangman’s Tree, The Hangman’s Tree,

It claimed my family, The Hangman’s Tree.

This tree deserves to burn, but the surprises aren’t over.

The villagers douse me with water, and it stings with much intensity.

My powers, my actions, are rendered useless.

The villagers plan to put me on The Hangman’s Tree.

The Hangman’s Tree, The Hangman’s Tree,

It will conquer me, The Hangman’s Tree.

I now am within my noose as they charge me with my crimes.

This is how it always ends.

They believe this is justice. I think not.

They are only human, and whatever they fear is put on The Hangman’s Tree.

The Hangman’s Tree, The Hangman’s Tree,

It allows me to see, The Hangman’s Tree.

I drop, and the noose grows tighter: I cannot breathe.

I choke out horrible sounds until I fall into darkness.

Finally, my body hangs limp.

I’m just another dead body on The Hangman’s Tree.

The Hangman’s Tree, The Hangman’s Tree,

It has claimed me, The Hangman’s Tree.

My soul still lingers to this very day near the tree.

There’s millions of us. One day, you’ll join us, too.

Our fates are all the same.

You, too, will be claimed by The Hangman’s Tree.

The Hangman’s Tree, The Hangman’s Tree,

It will claim thee, The Hangman’s Tree.
