A Single Strike

Silhouettes of a man slapping a woman across the face against a background of exploding rocks.

How intense, how harsh, how maddening it must be to feel the wrath of the one that you love the most

The love he has shown you leaves no presence in the instant that his palm crosses your cheek

Such anger! Such frustration! Such rage!

The one whom you sacrificed everything for has absolutely no gratitude to spare

You’ve displeased him, for what other reason could bring him to strike you?

Hot tears fall as you turn away

You don’t need him right here or right now

But where are you to go?

You completely destroyed what little shred of humanity you had to be by his side

Who else could you turn to except him?

If you turn to yourself for comfort, you would only ponder the matter to the point of exhaustion, always reminding yourself of his fury

The littlest voice in your head tells you to walk away from all this suffering, return to your old shell and rot the rest of your life under the cover of normalcy

Yet, you know that this voice is wrong

Whatever had been yourself had been wiped away by your new image, your new likeness, your new style

Run, but never hide. Night, but never day

You are trapped, whether you like it or not, but you knew moments like this would come to pass

You made this choice long ago, and you have yet come to regret it

A bigger, louder voice echoes through your mind

It tells you to run back to him, to lean on his shoulder and embrace him with open arms

Your heart starts to beat again, and the voice tells you to come

Then, you realize the voice had not been heard in the forefront of your conscience, but from your ears

He was calling out to you, reeling you back to him with his clever, sleek persuasion

Immediately, the bitterness leaves you, and your hatred towards his actions drains out of your mind, replaced with the desire to return to his passion

You turn back around and look at him

He smiles that smile that drives your heart wild and holds his hand out so that you might take it

You can’t contain your emotions any longer, and you run to him like you’ve never run before

The moment you fall into his embrace, you feel immediate reassurance that he will always love you, even if days like this happen
